Wholegrain Woodness
EMYR JONES
I am a wood and woodland worker; I make bespoke and rustic furnishings and all sorts of woody items, inspired by the natural shape of wood and various organic forms. Most of the wood I use has come from woodland work I do for local land owners although I also occasionally source wood from local tree surgeons. Pretty much all of the wood I use would have ended up as fire wood if I hadn't got my hands on it.
I like to use wood that is full of natural features: knots, cracks and especially spalting and try to keep as much of the natural character of a tree in the wood for my work. I collect my wood as logs and usually leave them outside in the weather for a year or more to give fungi a chance to colonize the wood before I have it milled, this usually results in it being stained all sorts of interesting ways, which is known as spalting.
Every piece of work I produce is a unique one off, even when making a series of boxes from the same planks, everyone is different, I am always guided by the wood, trying to use it in the most efficient and effective way I can. I love using a sustainable resource and trying to bring out as much of the character of the tree into my work as possible, I like to bring out the “wholegrain woodness” in all of the work I do.
