      Open Skies Studio

Hello, thank you for taking the time to stop and look at my work……

My name is Jemma Elsley and I work from my studio in the National Park near Pembroke, West Wales.

My creative journey has followed a path of general art and design, after which I chose to specialise in 3D design, gaining a HND in Ceramics & Glass at Plymouth University in 1996 and a BA Hons in Ceramics at The University of Wales, Cardiff (UWIC) in 1998.

After a relocation from Wiltshire to West Wales in 2018, I was able to establish Open Skies Studio and develop a range of work inspired by my surroundings, the loss of a loved one and the journey grief takes you on.

My current work has been inspired by the beautiful Pembrokeshire countryside where I now live. From the steep rolling hills and valleys to the beauty within the hedgerows and banks along the quiet country lanes, everyday I feel inspired to transform my ideas into reality.

Exploring details such as the wildflowers on my doorstep, interesting plants within the hedgerows and the unusual wind-swept trees I see every day, has supported my ideas and creations. Each piece of visual information that surrounds me, has inspired the development of my work.

Each design has also evolved to incorporate elements of symbolism I have taken comfort in when loss has felt too hard to process. Shapes and symbols such as birds, clouds, gates and pathways have been inspired by my thoughts of life beyond this world as we know it and my belief that a person’s spirt will live on after death. The links I have made are all part of my personal journey and how I perceive life, its experiences and my understanding of how important love for all living things is.

I hope that my work will offer comfort for those that need it, bring strength for those that feel depleted and bring beauty and light to someone even in their darkest moment. My mission is to create objects of kindness that offer hope, faith and light to those that may need it.

Both my ceramic work and my illustrations are designed to enable the viewer to feel uplifted, comforted and hopeful. Offering either a focal point for their feelings, or simply used and given as a gesture of kindness for someone in need.

My Ceramic pieces are a combination of hand building and mould making methods, using a white earthenware clay. Each piece visits the kiln three times and is finished using underglaze colours and ceramic decals.

My illustrations are created using watercolour and fine liner pen.

Commissions welcomed, please contact me for further information.
